Earth Day!

As Envirogirls, we want to encourage everyone to do simple things every day to

make a difference to the environment and to our world!

One thing that makes us angry is knowing that take away coffee cups are not

recyclable. Did you know that take away paper coffee cups have a plastic lining to stop the liquid seeping out of the cup? It is this plastic that makes the cup non-recyclable. These cups end up in landfill and when broken down, are ingested by birds and other marine life.

We are getting reusable coffee cups made with our logo on it. The cups are dishwasher safe and can hold a medium size coffee. You can get a 50c discount on your take away coffee if you walk in with one of our cups. This Earth Day (22 April) we set ourselves a target of getting 100 pre-ordered coffee cups in one week! Here are 9 easy ways you can save the planet this earth day:

1.Make less garbage: plastic is a big problem! Replace plastic items with reusable

options.

2. Mind your gadgets: smart phones should be recycled. Throwing out smartphones

and computers contribute to e-waste. This is dangerous because of chemicals that

leek into the soil

3. Compost what you can: some parts of food that are eaten should be turned to

compost.

4. Turn out the lights: stop using outdoor lighting when you don’t need it because it

wastes energy and the world will have less energy.

5. Stop mowing your lawn: mow your lawns every 2 weeks because it allows insects

to help with pollination.

6. When possible stay put: try not to use the car if not necessary.

7. Eat less meat: processing meat products uses a lot of energy so we should try to

eat less meat once a school term.

8. Waste less food: food takes a lot of energy to produce. Landfills cover

up food and keep it away from oxygen which contributes climate change. 1 fifth of our bins are filled with food.

9. Quit using plastic straws: because of their size and shape, they’re impossible to

recycle them. SO STOP USING THEM!!!
